Super Mario Maker is a functional and complete game, but some graphical and object omissions are begging for DLC additions. graphics have Mario's post-Mario 64 triple jump and wall jump moves, and Mario 3 and Super Mario World levels can respectively use Mario's raccoon tail and cape for flight, and offer much more verticality than regular Super Mario Bros. Most notably, levels using the New Super Mario Bros. Besides basic level layout and graphic style, you can set multiple areas connected by pipes and doors to add complexity, combine different objects for unique effects (like a Thwomp in a cloud that seeks you out before dropping, or a Bullet Bill launcher that fires mushrooms), and even place sound effect triggers (and record your own sound effects with the Wii U gamepad's microphone, but recorded sound effects can't be uploaded and shared with your levels).īesides graphics, the different games offer slightly different mechanics (though they mostly play identical). Super Mario Maker eventually becomes surprisingly powerful, with several dozen blocks, enemies, and obstacles to place across tile sets for five settings (overworld, underground, airship, haunted house, and castle) and four games (Super Mario Bros., Mario 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. You can also download other users' levels to see how they made them, but you can't upload them as your own after the fact (which prevents players from easily stealing others' levels). This mode is like the 10-Mario Challenge, but it consists purely of randomly selected user-made levels. You can browse individual players' courses, or sort all courses by popularity and trends, and even go through a 100-Mario Challenge. The Play mode lets you play your levels and levels made by other players. If you want to see how something works and tweak things, it's a vital option. It drops you right at the beginning of the level so you can try it out, and jumps back to the editor just as easily. You can instantly play any level you're working on by pressing the (-) button. You can unlock dozens of example levels, even if you can't reproduce them all until you've unlocked all of the game's elements, which is a separate process. You can unlock sample courses by beating them in the 10-Mario Challenge, an option in the Play mode that lets you run through eight sample levels with 10 lives, saving the levels to Coursebot as you beat them. You have to beat your levels before you can upload them the game doesn't let you share levels that can't be completed. Coursebot lets you save and load courses you're working on, upload finished courses, and even load sample courses you've earned. Create is the Maker part of Super Mario Maker, and the mode in which you'll be generating levels. Super Mario Maker is divided into two parts: Create and Play.
